Case Description
  • The patient was a 57 year old female who presented with invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 2, ER positive, PR positive, HER2 negative.
  • The lesion, measuring 2.1 cm, was located in the upper outer quadrant of her right breast, with multiple adjacent masses, in keeping with satellite lesions, along with additional non-mass enhancement.
  • A mastectomy using the hockey stick technique was planned to address the extent of the mass and the non mass enhancement, along with a sentinel lymph node biopsy.
  • The hockey stick incision is a modified, scalable approach to the ellipse pattern developed to achieve flat closure and target redundant lateral tissue after mastectomy.
  • The hockey stick technique addresses the problem of excess lateral tissue after mastectomy, or “dog ears,” during the index operation, without the need for additional invasive procedures, providing the patient with optimal functional and cosmetic results.
  • The patient elected to undergo a bilateral hockey stick mastectomy, for symmetry and an aesthetically flat closure.
