Line of Safety

Technique description



In all laparoscopic cholecystectomies, every effort should be made to fully dissect Calot's triangle and achieve the critical view of safety (CVS). However, under certain circumstances, the dissection may be difficult and even dangerous.


In such situations, an alternative to the CVS is a line of safety (LOS) between the sulcus of Rouviere and the hilar plate, which ensures dissection stays well away from the porta hepatis medially:
