Welcome

Welcome to the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Web site. This site provides teaching resources that can be used by medical educators in the classroom, and by trainees for self-study.

The introduction of high fidelity portable and hand held ultrasound systems has allowed physicians to use ultrasound at the point of care for rapid assessment of the patient's condition and determine appropriate therapy. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) for assessing the heart using a protocol called Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FOCUS) has provided clinically important information within minutes to guide decision-making in critically ill patients. The FOCUS cardiac protocol is becoming widely used by non-cardiologists in many clinical settings. POCUS protocols have also been developed for rapid assessment of the lungs, abdomen and vessels.

new item iconFOCUS and Lung Ultrasound Modules are now available in HTML5

The modules on this POCUS website are intended to help the user to relate ultrasound images to the three-dimensional anatomy of the structures they are viewing. This site contains two teaching and learning modules: the focused cardiac ultrasound module covers the five views used in FOCUS assessment and the second module teaches with the 6 views used in the ultrasound assessment of the lung.

These two modules have been converted from Flash to HTML5. The sections on pathology for these modules will be added in 2021 as the conversions of these sections are completed. The eFAST module which was previously available on this site has not been converted to HTML5 at this time.
