Virtual Interactive Cases: Template Case
Introduction
The process of case development is facilitated by using a template of all the history questions, functional assessment questions, physical examinations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging and consultation with specialists that might be carried out in the course of arriving at a diagnosis. The results of all the actions in the template are those of a normal person with no clinical abnormalities. Cases can then be created by substituting abnormal findings at appropriate places in the template, and inserting feedback and scoring for these actions which will appear in the debriefing.
GIM template
The GIM template we have created is be suitable for developing cases for general internal medicine, family medicine or emergency medicine. This basic template can be expanded with more detailed items that would be appropriate for other specialties. The basic template can also be modified for each gender and for a range of ages.
This template has been used to create Family medicine cases, Rheumatology cases, Ophthalmology cases and cases for the Nurse Practioner program in the Laurence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the Uniersity of Toronto.
Pediatric templates
We have also created templates for pediatric cases in three age ranges (Adolescent, Toddler and Infant) by modifying the items in the GIM tempalte to be appropriate for each age range:
Pharmacy template
We have also created a template for Pharmacy cases, where the goal is to assess the patient to determine the Drug Therapy Problems (DPTs)and determine the appropriate Card Plan items to address these DTPs. Example of these cases can be seen in the Pharmacy Cases section.
Intraoperative anesthesia template
A template for Intraoperative Anesthesia cases was developed, where the goal is to assess the patient to determine the cause of an intraoperative adverse event and select appropriate interventions the event. Example of these cases can be seen in the Anesthesia Cases section.
Preoperative anesthesia assessment template
A template for Intraoperative Anesthesia cases was developed, where the goal is to assess the patient to determine the cause of an intraoperative adverse event and select appropriate interventions the event. Example of these cases can be seen in the Preoperative Cases section.
